SUSTAINING AN ANCIENT CRAFT
The making of Papcot bags is a jealously guarded secret. And for good reason. The manufacturing process is unique and provides employment for rural communities in India.
By using a Papcot bag, you are sustaining communities and livelihoods.
Because Papcot bags are made from cotton, they are highly reclycable and biodegrable.
At the end of their life, the bags will simply return to nature, with no harm to the environment.
Papcot bags are made from cotton waste, collected from the floors of cotton mills.
With Papcot bags, this waste has a second life.
Less Waste. Less Pollution. Great for the environment
Papcot bags are handmade by artisans. No industrial processes that pollute.
Tjherefore PapCot bags have a low carbon footprint, reducing environmental damage.
For this reason alone, PapCot bags are clever alternative to paper.
THE MAKING OF PAPCOT PAPER
Village women cut the waste garments and fibres, to begin the process of making Papcot. These women are the mainstay of the process and the community owns the intellectual property of the Papcot process. This empowers the women economically by providing them with an independent income.
The settled paper is dried with sunlight, thus using a sustainable and free energy source. Drying takes between four and six days.
The cut fibres are soaked in preparation for the next stage of setting the frame for the sheets. Soaking requires only a small amount of water, which is reused many times. This makes Papcot bags very environmentally-friendly. The base colour of the bags is determined at this stage.
Settling the soaked material gives it consistency, form and size. It requires patience and time. Flower seeds are embedded here for PapCot seed fabric.
Each bag and article is cut by hand, thus each is unique.
Traditional blocks are used for printing with natural colours.
After the end of production, the paper is ready to be transformed into anything you wish!
